Having regard to the enormous cost, the Board resolved
not to entertain the project for lighting the streets in the
district by means of electricity.
MORTUARY.
Regarding the question of providing a Mortuary in lieu of
the existing one in Ewer Street as required by the London
County Council, the Sanitary Committee, in January last,
reported as follows:—
"Our Surveyor, in accordance with instructions, has
been in frequent communication with the London County
Council with the object of acquiring a site. It will be
remembered that it was suggested a site might be obtained
by co-operation with the County Council that would be
available for the purpose of a Coroner's Court as well as a
Mortuary.
"We have at length received from the Valuer of the
Council a plan of a site belonging to the Ecclesiastical
Commissioners, having a frontage both in Lavington Street
and Farnham Place, and containing an area of about 4950
square feet. It is proposed that the London County
Council should acquire this land and convey to the Board
the portion coloured blue on the plan, which would be
available not only for the purposes of a Mortuary, but also
for a Shelter for persons while their rooms and linen were
being disinfected, as required by the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891, and for a steam disinfecting apparatus as
required by the London County Council in various communications
addressed to the Board. The portion coloured
red on the plan would be used by the Council for the
Coroner's Court.
"The area proposed to be taken by the Board contains
about 3,425 square feet, which, at 10s. per square foot, the
price at which it is understood the Ecclesiastical Commissioners
will sell, would amount to £1,712 10s.
"We are unanimously of opinion that the site would be
a suitable one for the purposes referred to, and therefore
we recommend the Board to purchase the land from the
London County Council at the price named."
The above recommendations of the Committee were adopted.
It has been arranged, however, that a separate conveyance
shall be taken from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners of the
land required by the Council and the Board respectively.
