sewer, causing obstruction to the flow of sewage matter; it was
decided to lay a new 12 inch pipe sewer in the same line, but at
a lower level than the existing brick sewer.
A length of about 700 feet of pipe was laid, and all connections
picked up and made good; in filling the sewer, about 350
cubic yards of hard core was used. A new manhole was
constructed in the carriageway of Emerson Street, and an old
defective side entrance abolished. This pipe sewer is connected
to the 15 inch pipe sewer in Southwark Bridge Road, which
runs under the Bridge Incline to the Park Street Arch, and joins a
brick Sewer at Castle Street. The sewer is connected with a
flushing pipe through Moss Alley to a penstock in Bank side, and
advantage is taken of the stream tides to flush the sewers in
connection with this pipe.
The 12-in. pipe sewer running in rear of Brunswick Street
and Hatfield Street was opened and cleansed for a length of
about 380 feet; a new pipe sewer should be laid in Brunswick
Street at a lower level than the existing one, and all drainage
diverted from the sewer first mentioned, which should be
abolished.
Brunswick
Street.
The short length of pipe sewer in Counter Street, which is
connected to the main sewer in the Boro' High Street, was
found to be imperfectly ventilated, and it was also desirable to
construct some means of access to the sewer in the event of any
stoppage taking place; a new manhole was therefore constructed
at the lower end and a flushing pipe at the highest point; also,
by permission of the owner of some premises near the upper
end of the sewer, a 4-in. iron ventilating pipe was carried up
the building to a point considerably above the roof and entirely
clear of any windows. Since these improvements have been
effected no complaints have arisen.
In connection with the before mentioned works the following
is a list of the size and length of pipes laid, including
junctions:—

12-in. pipes

9-in. pipes

If to this is added the length of pipes laid tor private drainage
connections during the year, the following gives the total length

my department; this of course excludes the pipes laid within
