margins to the tram lines of 8 in. x 6 in. x 9 in. beech wood
blocks, these margins in future are to be maintained by the
Hoard, and the Tramway Company is to be charged with the
cost of same. It was first intended to leave the portion of
comparatively new granite pitching by the end of Marshalsea Road,
but your Committee ultimately decided to remove the same and
pave them in Bcdale Stre t, for which new stone was estimated.
The stones were found to be bedded in concrete and it was only
by exercising great care that most of the stones were not
broken in pulling up, as they were laid and grouted in Portland
Cement.
Bennett Street, from Stamford Street to Upper Ground
Street, wai- stripped of the macadam to the required depths for
the concrete and wood paving proposed to be laid ; on removing
the macadam, the arched vaults which extend both underneath
the footway and carriageway on either side of the road were
laid bare and were found to be in a dangerous condition and
unsafe for public traffic. I immediately called the attention of
the London County Council's District Surveyor of Buildings to
the vaults, which resulted in his condemning as dangerous
structures most of the arches in question.

Street.
The work of reconstruction was both slow and tedious, and
it was not until ten months had elapsed that we could complete
the paving works in this street, considerable difficulty was
experienced in getting the owners to comply with their notices.
In the case of eight vaults, belonging respectively to the houses
Nos. 8, 5, 6 & 8, that portion of the vaults extending under the
carriageway was forfeited by the owner on your Board undertaking
to build a head wall and making good the remaining
portion of the vault where it joined the new wall. The total
cost of this work including the filling of the carriageway
portions was £38 19s. 1d. The wood paving was immediately
proceeded with after the completion of the arches and an area
of 620 yards superficial was paved with Sin. X 5in. X 9in.
