The improvement will, it is expected, shortly be carried
out, a deed bearing date the 25th day of August, 1898,
having been executed between the Company and the Board,
by which the former, in consideration of the lands given up to
them coloured green on the plan, convey to the Board for public
uses the lands coloured red on the plan, and covenant to pull
down and remove, within six months from the date of execution
of the deed, so much and such part of Crown Wharf as is
situate upon the land coloured red on the plan. The nature of
the arrangement will be better understood on reference to the
plan, a copy of which is hereunto annexed.

In January last, Mr. Rawle called the attention of the Board
to the vexatious prosecution to which several Members of the
Board were being subjected, notwithstanding the decision of the
Court of Appeal in (Gordon v. Williamson last year, and moved
that a Committeo be appointed to consider the position of
Members of the Board in relation thereto, with authority to take
Counsel's opinion, if necessary. The motion was carried and the
following were appointed, viz: the mover of the resolution,
and Messrs. Carter, Coles, Grattan, and Meikle.
In the same month Inspector Grist reported a revival of the
so-called "fair," held at the Cross-Bones Burial Ground in
Union Street, and which, in the early part of the year 1892, the
Board had. at considerable expense, caused to be suppressed.
The matter was referred to the Paving and General Purposes
Committee, with instructions to serve notice for abatement and
take legal proceedings, if necessary. Arrangements were,
however, come to shortly afterwards by which the tenant vacated
the premises.

The Board having paved with asphalte the footway on the
East side of the Southwark Bridge Road, towards Soutliwark
Bridge, it was thought desirable that the small portion of footway
between it and the foot of the Bridge on that side should be similarly
paved, and a proposal was made on behalf of the Board to the City
Corporation to take it over as a public highway if they would
bear the expense of laying down asphalte. The Corporation
assented, and subsequently an arrangement was come to for
paving and taking over the corresponding piece on the West side,
the Corporation contributing £50 towards the expense of so
doing. The work has been executed by the Limmer Asphalte
Paving Company, and it has been agreed* that the boundary line
as between the City and the local authority shall be the southern
side of the curb of the iron railing at the top of the stairs leading
to the River Thames.
