110 complaints as to various nuisances have been made at
the offices, and attended to, and notices served where necessary.
I have daily inspected and reported to the Board as to the
cleansing and scavenging of the Public Streets, which, with a
few exceptions, have been very well carried out.
The street watering has also been better done than hitherto ;
and but few complaints have been received.
I have paid careful attention to the lighting, cleansing, and
keeping in repair the Public Lamps, and have pleasure in stating
that the work on the whole has been very well done.
It appears that in previous years difficulty has been experienced
in the removal of snow.
This year I have endeavoured to obviate the difficulty, and
have reason to believe there has been an improvement in this
respect.
The matter at all times is a difficult one to deal with.
I have had occasion to call the Medical Officer's attention to
several houses, which, in my opinion, were unfit for habitation,
viz:—
119, Gravel Lane
2 to 12, Orange Street
Orange Court
15 & 16, Great Charlotte Street, and
34, Surrey Row
in nearly every instance the houses, although small, were
occupied by several families, the rooms being let separately
to the poorest of persons. With the Board's sanction notices
were served, and the whole repaired and put into proper
.
