street has been widened to an uniform width, and room for an
additional line of vehicles has been given to the carriageway.
The carriageway paving works were executed by Messrs.
Gabriel, but were not carried out during the period to which
this report refers.
Lavington
Street.
This is practically a new thoroughfare, and the portion constructed
by this Board occupies the sito of what was formerly
known as the Grove. The old buildings, on the south side,
were pulled down and a street 40-feet in width formed. The
carriageway is 26-feet in width, and the footways on each
side are 7-feet wide. The carriageway is paved with new
3" x 7" granite pitching, laid on 9-inches of concrete, new
6" x 12" granite edge curb and channelling. The footways
are paved with new 3-inch York stone.
The London Tramways Company have laid new steel rails in
Blackfriars Road, on the east side, between Great Charlotte
Street and the terminus at Blackfriars Bridge. The carriageway
was relaid to the margin of the Company's pitching in ordor
to meet the revised levels of the new rails.
Sewer Works.
The following works in connection with the sewers, &c.,
have been executed during the year.
Pump Court.
The 12-inch pipe sewer in Pump Court has been taken up,
cleared, and relaid to an improved fall.
Gravel Lane.
A new side entrance has been constructed on the main brick
3ewer in Gravel Lane, between Ewer Street and Union Street.
Phis is the second new side entrance that has been added to
those formerly existing between Southwark Street and Union
Street. Great advantage has been derived from these side
entrances, as the large quantity of hot water and chemical
matter which finds its way into this sewer rendered it unsafe
at times for our sewer men to travel any distance in the sewer.
The sewer can now be safely reached in every part.
Brunswick
Street.
A new 9-inch pipe connection has been made between the
concrete flushing tank in Brunswick Street and the pipe sewer
in Cross Street. Provision was made during the construction
