to the proposal on the understanding that before the street is
taken over it shall be properly paved and a sewer constructed

Overhead
Wires.
Consequent upon the snowstorm which occurred on the
26th and 27th December, 1886, and proved so destructive to
overhead telegraph and telephone wires in the metropolis, this
Board passed the following resolution, and a copy was forwarded
to the President of the Board of Trade and the Metropolitan
Board of Works, viz.:—" That, taking into consideration
the damage done by the late gale, and the danger to life and
property caused by overhead wires, it is, in the opinion of this
Board, desirable that in future all such wires in the metropolis
should be placed underaround."

of.
In October, 1886, a letter was received from the Assistant
Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, inquiring when,
where, and at what cost cabs could be disinfected, and also
whether a certificate could be given to the driver of a cab that
had been disinfected to enable him to satisfy the police that
the work had been properly performed. It being desirable in
the interests of the public health that reasonable facilities
should be afforded to cab proprietors to have their vehicles
disinfected, and they being liable to penalties on default, the
Board resolved to undertake the duty at their stone yard in
Ewer Street, and to authorise their medical officer to give a
certificate as suggested, but only in respect of cabs belonging to
local proprietors, and on payment of a fee of 2s. 6d. in each case.
