13
July, 1886. A few days afterwards Mr. Harris acknowledged
the receipt of the testimonial in the following terms :—
" Oriental Lodge,
"147, Queen's Road, Beckham.
"12th July, 1886.
" To the Members of the St. Saviour s
"District Board of Works,
" Gentlemen,
"It is with feelings of the deepest emotion that I have
received a copy of the resolution which was adopted at your
meeting on the 9th June, in reference to my retirement from the
position of your representative at the Metropolitan Board of
Works.
" With the conviction that throughout my period of service in
that capacity, extending over more than thirty years, I have
given my best abilities, without stint of time or trouble, to the
end that I might faithfully discharge the important duties you
had entrusted to my hands, it is indeed most grateful to my
feelings that my colleagues by their unanimous voice have
accorded to me a testimonial of so flattering a character and
expressed in terms of such courtesy, kindness, and sympathy.
"In the pain which I feel in severing a connection filled with
such pleasurable recollections to myself, and in relinquishing a
position I have valued most highly, it affords me the greatest
consolation to receive such an assurance that I retain the esteem
and goodwill of all my late colleagues upon the St. Saviour's
District Board of Works.
In now saying farewell, I beg to express my most sincere
and heartfelt thanks for the kindly and generous support which
lias been invariably extended to me by every member of the
Board and by all its officers.
"I remain, Gentlemen,
" Yours most faithfully,
" CHAS. HARRIS."
