of the School Board for London, and requesting the co-operation
of this Board, in a proposed endeavour to limit the same, this
Board appointed Mr. Sutton and Mr. Chappell as delegates to
attend a conference at Westminster of the several local authorities
concerned, and the assembled delegates have lately passed the
following resolutions :—
" (1) That this Meeting, composed of Delegates from the Rating Authorities
of the Metropolis, although earnestly desiring to carry out the provisions
of the Elementary Education Act in their integrity, is strongly of opinion
that more economy is necessary in the interests of the Ratepayers than at
present characterises the policy of the School Board for London; that the
present Rate of 4½d. in the pound is excessive, and that a Rate, not
exceeding 3d. in the pound is, and should be sufficient for the purposes
of the School Board; it having been distinctly understood at the time
when the Act of Parliament establishing the Board was passed that the
Rate should not exceed that amount."
" (2) That it be recommended to the various Rating Authorities, and to the
Ratepayers, that it is advisable to call Meetings in their respective
localities to draw attention to the present action and policy of the London
School Board, and to combine in the several Divisions, and support
Candidates who will pledge their word to economy, and endeavour to
keep the expenditure within a rate not exceeding threepence in the pound
per annum as originally contemplated."
This Board also causcd a communication to be addressed to the
Members for Southwark of the School Board, urging upon them the
necessity of using their influence in favour of economy; and, at
the suggestion of the Westminster Board of Works, it has lately
addressed a memorial to the First Lord of the Treasury praying
for the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into the
subject of Elementary Education in the Metropolis.
This Board has cordially approved of a proposal made by the
Vestry of St. George-the-Martyr for the formation of a new line of
Street, to extend from the Southwark Bridge Road in St. Saviour's,
to a point opposite Gt. Dover Street in St. George's Parish, and
has communicated with the Metropolitan Board in support of the
project.
This Board has petitioned Parliament in favour of the Toll
Bridges (River Thames) Bill, having for its object the freeing from
oposcd New
reet.
11 Bridges.
