The serious inundations which have taken place of late years by
the overflow of the lliver Thames have been the subject of much
attention and consideration on the part of this Board, and efforts
have been made from time to time to induce the Metropolitan
Board of Works to construct an embankment of the southern
shore of the Thames, but unavailingly, owing to the enormous cost
which so extensive a work would entail; but shortly after the last
Hood, which occurred in November 1875, this Board resolved that
measures were imperatively necessary for the future protection of
the district, and appointed a deputation, who waited upon the
Metropolitan Board on the 19th of the same month, and presented
a memorial, praying that measures might be taken without delay
lor protecting this district from the periodical and disastrous
Hooding to which it is liable, and urging that the necessary works
should be carried out as a metropolitan improvement. About the
same time the Metropolitan Board gave notice of their intention to

of the roadway, at a net cost to the Parish of Christchurch of about £572, as the following account will show :—
