From the foregoing facts it is evident that there were fewer
deaths registered from " all other causes," not specified in the
Tables, than in the previous year; and in order to enable the
Board to attain a knowledge of the kinds of disease which are
classed under this head, I beg to- submit for inspection an abstract
of my weekly record.

Subtracting from this number the epidemics—182—there remain
630 deaths, which correspond to the sum of the columns headed
. "violence," " inquests," and " all other causes," in the 6th annexed
statistical table.
It is also worthy of remark that a larger proportion of the 812
deaths occurred among children of less than one year of age, and
adults of over sixty years. Of children there were 208, and of
aged adults 185, the total being equal to nearly half the mortality
of the entire population of the district. Of the twenty-four persons
whose life extended beyond 80 years, several nearly reached
the age of ninety, and one that of ninety-three.
The number of births registered was 1,034, being 10 fewer than
those of the previous year, but 222 more than the number of deaths.
This brings up an estimated addition of 1,519 to the enumerated
population of 1871.
In seasons when epidemic disease is both wide-spread and severe,
it is difficult, and in some cases impossible, to trace the cause of its
prevalence in particular localities, and it is only where nuisances
are permitted to remain undisturbed, and obvious precautions
neglected, that it may be expected to appear, and upon its
