???h, in page 80. Subsequent to this date other Contracts have
??? entered into, viz., by Mr. Hearn, for the Cleansing- of the
???ict, and by Mr. Boakes, for the Collection of Dust therein, the
???er to receive ₤1,750 per annum, the latter to pay £200 per
???m. Each Contract is for a term of Three Years.
??? will be remembered that the Clock Tower, at the foot of
???don Bridge, was presented to and accepted by the Metropolitan
???d of Works, with a view to its removal, and re-erection in
???wark Park, as stated in the Ninth Annual Report of this
???d ; but, after the lapse of eighteen mouths, a communication
??? received from the Metropolitan Hoard, stating that they had
???ined Tenders for its removal, the lowest of which was ₤959, and
??? sum being very much in excess of what they had anticipated,
??? must decline to accept the Tower. To this letter a reply was
??? calling their attention to the fact of their previous acceptance
??? the Tower, and expressing an opinion that it was not competent
??? them to repudiate the responsibility of its removal ; but the
Metropolitan Board, in a letter dated the 10th of October, 1866,
???lly declined to carry out their engagement. The responsibility
???ng thus thrown back into the hands of this Hoard, it was thought
??? advisable to take any steps for its removal in the winter, and it
???w stands referred to the Paving Committee to make arrangements
??? disposing of the materials of the Tower, and to having the site
???ared in accordance with a Resolution of the Board, bearing date
??? 14th of November last. It is proposed to erect a Sanctuary
???d Lamp Column on or near the site.
By the lamented death of Henry Withers, Esq., of the London
???d Westminster Hank, the office of Treasurer became vacant, and
??? April last, the Board elected William McKewan, Esq., Manager
??? the London and County Bank in his stead, the Account of the
Board being transferred accordingly.
