Sanitary Work.
During the year 117 notices were served upon the owners or
occupiers of property, also numerous verbal recommendations to
remedy sanitary defects, and 26 notices were served for the purpose
of disinfection after infectious disease. One summons was taken
out against the owner of a house who refused to obey a notice
served upon him to do certain specified sanitary works. On the.
service of the summons the works were at once commenced.
For flashing the pipe-sewers and gullies we now use, in place
of carbolic acid, a combination of manganate of soda and sulphuricacid
mixed with certain proportions of water. It is said to be more
effectual than carbolic acid and is used by the London County
Council in the treatment of the sewage at the outfalls.
Bake-Houses.
The bake-houses have been regularly inspected, and were found
in a satisfactory condition.
Houses Let Out in Lodgings.
Your Inspector, whom you appointed permanent inspector of
these houses, has regularly inspected them, and reported to me all
sanitary defects that came under his notice.
The pipe-sewers have been regularly flushed, those gullies
emitting offensive effluvia have also been flushed with the above
new disinfectant, and the several courts and passages in the parish
lime-whited.
I have the honour to be, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JOHN J. SKEGG,
Medical Officer of Health.
29, Craven Street.
