16 new lanterns experimentally fixed in the Strand have been
purchased, as also one upon the refuge at the western entrance of
the Strand.

The cost of lighting, cleansing, and maintaining, is as follows:—

SLOP AND DUST COLLECTING.
From the tabulated statement attached to this Report it will be
seen that there have been removed from the parish 7,701 loads of
house refuse, and 2,660 loads of road sweepings and slop.
The labour and horses employed in this work are 8 sweepers, 2
machine brooms, and 9 Slop and Dust Vans. In addition to these it
is occasionally found necessary to employ an extra slop van.

The surfaces of wood and asphalte pavements are washed as
often as found necessary, nine orderly men are also employed in
collecting horse droppings, and in the first part of the day in
spreading ballast upon these pavings. The footways in front of
vacant spaces are swept and cleansed.
