Death-rate per 1,000 for the year 1880, 16.8.
Ratio of Deaths to population 1 in 59.
By the above figures the death-rate per 1,000 was 16.8.
This death-rate is based upon data, supplied by the
Census of 1871, the population was then 21,238; this
year, 1881,the Census returns were 17,447,thus showing
a decrease in the population since the last Census, which,
as I before mentioned, is due to the migration of the
people, from the demolition of houses, and other causes.
The death-rate for this present year, 1881, will be
higher, because based upon a diminished population.
The correctness of a death-rate is not always to be
relied upon, from the fact of the difficulties of ascertaining
accurately the population. In a decennial period a
population will vary so much, it may increase or decrease.
The only way of knowing the correct population of any
certain district for statistical purposes, would be to
make an Annual Census, but for obvious reasons this
would be out of the question.
Appended is the annual death-rate per 1,000 in
the parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields during the last
ten years :—
