of the houses in bedfordbury and
other parts of the parish.
To the Vestry of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
Gentlemen,
Agreeably to your resolution of the 12th of
August last, "That the attention of the Medical
Officer of Health be called to the 4th section of the
Artisan's Dwellings Act, and that he be requested,
with reference thereto, to report to the Vestry as to
the sanitary state of the buildings throughout the
parish, according to the provisions of the Act."
I have made an inspection of the houses and courts
situated in the parish, which in my opinion should be
demolished to make way for proper and healthy
dwellings.
I need hardly point out to you the wisdom of the
Legislature in passing this Act; an Act, if properly
carried out, will do more to raise the moral and
physical well-being of the poor than any measure
passed in our time. Not only will the poor feel its
beneficial effect, but also the middle and upper class;
these improved dwellings will not, as the present
