The two preceding Tables of the deaths in each???
the Registrar's districts afford some interesting fact???
especially showing the differing influence of disease i???
different classes of society. The numbers of the popu???
lation in the two districts arc not very different, whil???
in rank and social position they are very dissimilar; fo???
although in the Charing Cross District there are a fe???
miserable courts, the greater part of the population i???
very superior to the mass of that in the Long Acr???
District. In the Charing Cross District, the deaths in???
children under 5 amount to 59, in the Long Acre District
to 101. There were only 33 deaths from zvmoti???
diseases in the Charing Cross, while they numbered 49???
in the Long Acre District. Those who arc acquainted
with the localities will at once see, that the loss of life
in the denser populations speaks volumes as to the unfavourable
influence on health from crowded and illventilated
dwellings.
