severity of cold will have most influence. In the
number of deaths from old age, there is no remarkable
difference in the 3 years; but at the intermediate ages,
the active portion of our life, the numbers are 64 this
year, 79 last year— 74 in 1859; 10 less in one
instance, and 15 in the other. Of course this is the
most valuable period of life, and precisely the ages
when the saving of life is most important.
Since the cessation of the intense frost, London
has become remarkably healthy, as it was also during
the greater part of the last year, and I think we are
warranted in considering that the continuous attention
to sanitary measures, and frequent appeals to the
public on the subject of health are producing great
benefits to the whole community.
