I have given above a summary of the births,
deaths, and principal diseases of the six years which
have elapsed since the Metropolis Management Act
came into operation. There is no remarkable difference
in the number of births, the average for the six years
being 622.5, while the average of deaths for the same
period was 598.1. The mortality of the year 1861
was, therefore, 26 below the average.
In the zymotic or epidemic class of diseases,
measles and whooping cough have slightly increased,
