TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS
OF THE
Vestry of St. James's, Westminster.
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report
upon the Public Health of the Parish of St. James's,
Westminster, for the year 1895.
The figures given by the Census of 1891 showed that the
resident population in St. James's then numbered 24,993—
the District covering an area of 1G2 acres. Taking the
population at 24,993, that would be an average of 15422
persons per acre in 1891, against 184 per acre in 1881.
The Census of 1891 gave the mean density of the population
in Registration London as 56.5 persons per acre.
During the year 1895 the net mortality in the district
of St. James's has been 407 deaths. Taking the population
of St. James's as 24,993, 407 deaths gives a death-rate of
16.28 for each 1,000 persons living in the district.
The above figures for the net mortality are obtained by
taking the deaths registered as having occurred in St.
James's, adding to this number the deaths in outlyinginstitutions
of persons who had been removed from St
