STREET LIGHTING.
On the 25th March, 1893, there were 830 public lamps in
the various thoroughfares of the Parish, and this number
was decreased by 2\ during the year. At Lady-day, 1894,
there were 786 ordinary street lamps, 6 metered urinal
lamps, and 35½ larger lamps attached to refuges, &c.,
making a total of 827½. The cost of lighting 3 lamps on
refuges in the Haymarket is borne equally between this
Vestry and the Vestry of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. This
accounts for the ½-lamp just referred to.
The ordinary street lamps consume 5ft. of gas per hour,
and are lighted, extinguished, and cleaned by the Gas Company,
at an inclusive sum of £2 17s. 8d. per lamp per
annum. As regards the refuge lamps, payment is made
according to the consumption of gas as registered by meter.
The total expenditure for street lighting during the past
year amounted to £2,722 17s. 2d., as compared with
£2,686 4s. 4d. for the previous twelve months. This sum
is exclusive of maintenance, repairs, and new lamp-posts,
lanterns and fittings, which involved further payments
amounting to £523 5s. 7d.
