The payments to Central Authorities last year amounted
to £9,880 6s. 4d. more than for the previous year, and
to £16,079 2s. 6d. more than for the year 1891-92. It will
be seen that of the total sum raised under the name of
local rates, a very small proportion is applicable to strictly
local expenditure, no less than £122,612 5s. 10d. of the
total of £175,779 18s. 11d. having been paid over during
the year to various authorities over whose expenditure the
Vestry and other Parochial Boards have no control. In
other words, out of every shilling raised as local rates in
St. James's, less than fourpence is spent by the Parochial
Authorities.
INCREASING RATES.
The Vestry received an invitation from the Vestry of St.
Anne, Limehouse, in January last, to appoint t wo Delegates
to attend a Conference proposed to be held at the Town
Hall, Limehouse, with a view to determining upon some
