TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS
of the
VESTRY OF ST. JAMES, WESTMINSTER
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report
upon the Public Health of the Parish of St. James's,
Westminster, for the year 1893.
The figures given by the Census of 1891 showed that
the resident population in St. James's then numbered
24,993, the District of the parish of St. James's covering an
area of 162 acres. Taking the population at 24,993 for the
year 1891, that would be an average of 154 22 persons per
acre against 184 per acre in 1881. The Census of 1891
gave the mean density of the population in Registration
London as 565 persons per acre.
The position of St. James's as the shopping centre for
the best retail trade of the west end of London makes the
District more and more a city of luxurious shops, hotels,
club', and lodging houses. Increasing facilities for travel
to the suburbs, and the increasing value of premises in St.
James's, necessitate its utilization for business purposes
during the day, and its comparative desertion at night.
