LONDON (EQUALIZATION OF RATES) BILL.
As previously mentioned in the preceding paragraph the
Vestry presented a petition to Parliament against the Bill
introduced by the Government last year, having for its
object the equalization of rates in the metropolis. The
Vestry feel that the principle involved in this measure is of
such great importance to the Parish of St. James, and its
effect so little understood or appreciated by the Parishioners
that they deem it desirable to reprint, for the information
of the ratepayers, the following report on the Bill presented
to the Vestry by the late Vestry Clerk:—
The effect of this Bill on St. James's will be as follows:—
The Parish will contribute to the Equalization Fund on
thecc basis of rateable value. A rate of 6d. in the £ on
the present rateable value of the Parish (745,090)
will raise 18,627
The Parish will be entitled to a credit from the Equalization
Fund on the basis of population. The population of
London at last census was 4,232,118. The Fund will
amount to £838,561 per annum. The population of
St. James's was 24,995, so that the share to which St.
James' will be entitled is24995/4232118 of £838,561 4,952
Net charge on the rates (equivalent to an addition of more
than 4d. in the £ per annum) £13,675
