STREET LIGHTING.
On the 25th March, 1890, there were 818 public lamps
in the various thoroughfares of the Parish, 782 of which
were ordinary street lamps (459 burning cannel gas, and
323 burning common gas), 4 were urinal lamps, and 32 were
larger lamps attached to refuges, and this number remained
unaltered on the 25th March, 1891.
The ordinary street lamps are lighted, extinguished,
and cleansed by the Gas Company, at an inclusive sum of
£2 17s. 0d. for cannel, and £2 17s 8d. for common gas per
lamp per annum. The light given is practically identical,
4ft. of cannel gas being supplied per lamp per hour, and 5ft.
of common gas. As regards the refuge lamps, payment is
made according to the consumption of gas as registered
by meter. The total cost of street lighting for the past
year amounted to £2,658 6s. 8d., as compared with
£2,707 0s. 11d. for the previous twelve months. This
sum is exclusive of new lamp-posts, lanterns and fittings,
which cost a further sum of £373 15s. 1d.
