duced in the year 1888-9. but the full effect of which was
not manifested in the accounts for that year, as the increased
consumption was not adopted until after the year had commenced,
and partly to the erection of a few additional lamps.
The extra cost of new lamp-posts, lanterns, and fittings,
as compared with the previous year, is principally due to
the purchase of new and improved lanterns for almost all the
street lanterns in the Parish, as mentioned in last year's
Report.
In consequence of the alteration in the description of
street lanterns, it became necessary to alter the arrangements
which had hitherto been adopted for the maintenance of the
lanterns, lamp-posts, &c. The Gas Company had for many
years contracted to keep the street lanterns in repair, paint
the lamp-posts annually, and repair or replace them, when
broken, at an inclusive charge of 3s. per lamp per annum.
When the new lanterns were fixed, tenders were invited for
their maintenance, the painting of the lamp-posts, &c., from
a few firms, and the tender of Messrs. S. Pontifex & Co.
was accepted at the following rates.
The arrangement is
terminable on the 25th December in any year, on one month's
previous notice:—
