duty which was formerly paid to the Metropolitan Board
of Works was, however, allowed to lapse on the 5th July,
and the produce thereof, about £350,000 a year, has been
replaced by the rates. This sum represents an addition
of nearly 3d. in the pound to the metropolitan ratepayer,
and the price of coal has considerably advanced since the
abolition of the duty.
INHABITED HOUSE DUTY.
The Yestry again communicated with the Chancellor of
the Exchequer in the month of April respecting the anomalies
incident to the levying of the Inhabited House Duty, to
which reference has been made in previous Reports, but
without result.
Taking advantage of the prospective surplus which it was
commonly believed would be available for the readjustment
of taxation, the Yestry once more addressed the Chancellor
of the Exchequer on the subject early in March, 1890, but
the Budget speech had not been delivered at Lady-day.
VESTRY PROPERTY.
Vestry Hall.—The Vestry Hall and offices were cleaned
and some small painting work was carried out, during the
summer recess, at a cost of £49.
Stables and Stoneyard.—No works of importance have
been required during the year.
Disinfector.—The Disinfector has been used for disinfecting
bedding, clothing, &c., for parishioners on 51
occasions, compared with 42 in 1888-9, and 81 in 1887-8.
