SALE OF SUBSTITUTES FOR BUTTER.
The Margarine Act, 1887, requires all substances,
"whether compound or otherwise, prepared in imitation of
butter, and whether mixed with butter or not,"to be sold as
Margarine under a penalty not exceeding £20 for the first
offence, £50 for a second, and £100 for a third or any subsequent
offence. Every package of Margarine is to be branded
and durably marked, as such, in a specified manner, and
every parcel exposed for sale, by retail, is to have a label
attached, clearly visible to the purchaser.
It will be seen that the law does not prohibit the sale of
butter substitutes as such, but secures to intending purchasers
the knowledge whether he is buying butter or a colourable
imitation. The Vestry recognise that many butter substitutes
are wholesome articles of diet, and believe that the acknowledgement
of their status by the new law will be attended
by advantage in many ways.
A copy of the Act has been sent to every dealer in Butter
in the parish, in order that they may become acquainted with
the stringent conditions attaching to the sale of substitutes
as the genuine article.
