footways. The work was put out to public tender, the
lowest, that of Messrs. Mowlem and Co. for £136, being
accepted.
"Walker's Court.—The Vestry have again had under
consideration the desirability of widening Walker's Court,
and thus, by makino a short connecting link between
Rupert Street and Berwick Street, opening up a direct
route for vehicular traffic between Coventry Street and
Oxford Street. It appeared probable, however, that any
further demolition of property in the neighbourhood at the
present time would be disastrous to many tradesmen, who
are still suffering from the loss of business occasioned by
other street improvements carrried out in the immediate
vicinity ; objection was also taken by many who are
intimately acquainted with the neighbourhood, that the
destruction of the street market which would necessarily
follow the opening up of a through line of traffic would
be disadvantageous to the poorer classes. Under these
circumstances the Vestry did not feel justified in proceeding
with the matter.
Noel Street.—A proposal to connect Noel Street with
Great Marlborough Street, by removing a few houses on
the east side of Poland Street, has also been under
consideration, but in the absence of existing Parliamentary
power enabling the Vestry to recoup part of the expense
of the improvement by creating frontages to the new
portion of the street, no action was taken in the matter.
In the event of the Vestry applying to Parliament at any
future time for extended power to carry out local improvements,
this proposed extension of Noel Street will receive
further consideration.
