been paved with asphalte by way of experiment ; and the
patent composition pavement which was laid about three years
since at Piccadilly Circus proving unsuitable, has been taken
up and replaced with York stone.
No drainage work of any magnitude has been carried out,
but the sewers have been cleansed, flushed, and otherwise
attended to throughout the year. The requisite consents
having been obtained, ventilating shafts from the sewers were
run up the side of Ingestre Buildings and the end of St.
Luke's Church, with a view to preventing the escape of effluvium
through the surface ventilators into the street.
Further details of the various paving and drainage works
carried out during the year will be found in the Surveyor's
Report, commencing on page 109.
GAS MAINS.
Consent was given, upon the application of the Gas Light
and Coke Company, to the laying of a new 4-inch main under
the footway on the south side of Broad Street, and a new
6-inch main under the carriageway of King Street, Saint
James's.
HYDRAULIC MAINS.
Upon the application of the London Hydraulic Power
Company, the Vestry gave their consent to the laying of mains
for the transmission of hydraulic power along Pall Mall, St.
James's Street. Piccadilly, Clifford Street, and Cork Street.

disturbance and reinstatement of public streets, is subject
to similar restrictions as undertakings of Gas and Water
Companies.
