Let us Pray.
Almighty and merciful God, bow down thine ear to the petitions of Thy
humble servants. Hallow with Thy blessing the house here to be built
for the repose and protection of the labouring poor, especially those of the
weaker sex. Grant that in all their labours they may labour in the Lord;
and this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth
and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.
Amen.
O Lord God, Father Almighty, bestow Thy grace on all concerned in the
government and support of this house, that they may faithfully and wisely
fulfil the charge committed to them, and may find their reward in the
sober, righteous, and Godly lives of those in whose behalf they undertake
the duties here to be entrusted to them. Grant this, O Lord, for Jesus
Christ's sake, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Anion.
THE HONORABLE MAUDE STANLEY
deposited in a cavity in the Foundation Stone a bottle containing a statement
relating to the Building, a copy of the Times Newspaper of the day,
a copy of the Report of the Vestry for the year 1884-5, and some current
coins of the realm, and after duly laying the stone, declared the Building
to have been formally commenced.
The Choir then sang a hymn as follows—
GOD our Help in ages past,
Our Hope for years to come,
Our shelter from life's stormy blast,
And our eternal Home 1
Under the shadow of Thy Throne,
Thy saints have dwelt secure ;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.
A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night,
Before the rising sun.
