tion of these Charities, and had made certain alterations in the
draft scheme, which, as so amended, had been now definitively
established.
It will be remembered that the two points to which the
Vestry specially addressed themselves were the constitution
of the new Governing Body, and the proportional representation
thereon of the parish of St. James.
To meet the objections which they entertained to the constitution
of the Trust, as proposed, the Vestry suggested
that co-optative Trustees should be altogether eliminated from
the scheme, or, in the alternative, that their term of office
should bo limited to the same period as that of representative
Trustees, five years, instead of being made a life appointment.
Upon examining the scheme as established, it was found that
the principle of co-optative Trustees had been retained, but
that the views of the Vestry had been met to some extent by
the term of office of this class of Trustees being limited to
eight years. The reason why the term of office of co-optative
Trustees should differ from that of representative Trustees is
not apparent, but the Vestry considered that an important
step had been taken towards keeping the Governing Body in
touch with modern ideas and requirements by the abolition of
life trusteeships, other than the ex-officio trust of the Vicar of
St. Martin's, and therefore did not further press their objection.
Although the Vestry dissented in principle from the appointment
of co-optative Trustees, they nominated Mr. Churchwarden
Crane, of 55, Regent Street, as the first co-optative
Trustee for this Parish, in the event of the Charity Commissioners
deciding to appoint co-optative Trustees. It was
therefore with some satisfaction that the Vestry learned that
their nomination had been adopted, and Mr. Crane appointed
accordingly.
