District appears as 215 persons per acre, and that of the
Berwick Street Sub-District as 109 persons per acre.
The net mortality for the year 1886 was 450 deaths.
Taking the population at 29,865, 450 deaths gives a deathrate
of 15.07 per 1,000.
The mortality from Zymotic diseases during the year has
been 29.
Of Fever and Diphtheria 14 cases came under notice during
the year; but many cases may not have been known, there
being as yet no law requiring that notice of such cases be
given to the Sanitary Authority. Of these 14 cases 1 was
Diphtheria, 1 Typhoid Fever, and 12 Scarlet Fever. Eleven
of the cases (all Scarlet Fever) were removed to extraParochial
Hospitals.
During the year 1886, 49 bodies were removed into the
Mortuary. In 14 cases bodies were removed from the
presence of families generally living in a single room, and
where, but for the public Mortuary, the family would have
lived and slept in the presence of a decomposing corpse, upon
which, possibly, a post-mortem would have had to be made
before interment could take place. In 15 cases the bodies
have been removed from hotels or lodging-houses. Twentyone
inquests have been held upon bodies lying in the Mortuary,
and 17 post-mortem examinations for judicial purposes have
been made in the Examination Room which adjoins the
Mortuary.
