Square Branch), Mr. George Richard Hemmerde, who succeeded him
as Manager of the Bank, was appointed Treasurer in his stead. An
arrangement exists by which interest is allowed on the daily balance
in the hands of the Treasurer, and interest at a fixed rate is charged
on the account when the same is overdrawn.
Vestry Clerk.—The Vestry have to regret the loss by death of
two old and valued servants during the past year in the persons of
Mr. George Buzzard, Vestry Clerk, and Mr. John ldfeld
Phippard, Assistant Vestry Clerk. The death of the latter, which
occurred on the 1st May, rendered necessary some rearrangement of
the staff in the Vestry Clerk's Office, and a Special Committee, of
whom Mr. Churchwarden Cox was elected Chairman, was appointed
to consider the subject. After much anxious deliberation, it
appeared to the Committee that, in view of the advancing age of
Mr. Buzzard, the best course to adopt, both in kindness to that
gentleman, and in the interest of the Vestry, would be to suggest
the advisability of his retirement on a superannuation allowance,
preparatory to considering the reconstitution of the office staff.
This view was adopted by the Vestry, and accepted by Mr. Buzzard.
Applications for the position of Vestry Clerk were thereupon invited,
with the idea that the candidate to be appointed should commence
his duties at Christmas, 1882, from which time the retirement of
Mr. Buzzard was to date. Before the time specified for considering
these applications had arrived, the circumstances were altered by
the death of Mr. Buzzard, and it became necessary that the new
Vestry Clerk should commence his duties forthwith, and an
amended advertisement intimating this alteration was accordingly
issued. The Committee selected eleven of the candidates for a
personal interview, and ultimately submitted three to the Vestry.
The election took place on the 7th September, when the choice of
the Vestry fell upon Mr. Harry wilkins, Assistant Clerk to the
Vestry of Kensington, who was thereupon declared duly elected
Vestry Clerk of this Parish. On the same date the Vestry unanimously
passed a vote of thanks to the Committee for the satisfactory
manner in which they had discharged their important duties.
