accompanying list, have all received, more or less, special
consideration, and have not been done as a matter of
course, or for the simple reason that the methods previously
adopted are the right methods to be continued for
the future.
The care taken in the construction of McAdam Roads
as at present formed, contrasts very favourably with the
system, or the want of it, in use twenty years since, which
was about the time efficient rolling was recognized as
essential, and adopted by the St. James's Yestry almost
at the risk of ridicule, but which has been since so
universally persevered in.
No actually New Sewers have been constructed, inasmuch
as every part of the Parish is drained by a sewer of
some kind—some of these are very old, and as most of
them were not intended originally for the purpose to
which they are now applied, alterations have had to be
made from time to time, and sometimes re-construction
has been found advisable or necessary. At present the
surface drainage of the Parish is in a good and effective
condition, but from the extreme age, and alterations in
the gullies and drains from the same, more or less
attention is constantly required, and the gullies themselves
re-built on a principle, where none at all was
originally attempted; the precautions taken to guard
against effluvia escaping into the street are effective, but
the risk of the same effluvia finding its way into the
houses is thereby much increased, almost seriously so.
