veniences (in fact they are more than conveniences,
being essentials), that sooner or later, and I
trust within the current year, a signal success,
which it will really be, will be effected in the
matter.
One success has to be recorded, though of course
all the details have been so constantly before the
Vestry that nothing more than a passing allusion
is necessary, that is the actual opening of the communication
between Rupert Street and Crown
Court; although it is a pity that more was not
accomplished, still the improvement is patent and
great, has much benefitted the neighbourhood, and
will be more felt in ten years hence than now. All
the details of this alteration being fresh in the
recollection of the Vestry a very slight allusion is
required here, but it should be borne in mind, in
justice, that in such an important neighbourhood
as St. James's, the carrying out of any scheme at
all is attended with so many obstacles to be overcome,
that anything whatever actually done may be
considered as a triumph, in a small way, perhaps,
but it is so here, as what would be easy at Brixton
or elsewhere is really serious in the St. James's
District or Parish.
