The Parish of St. James's, Mestminster.
Reverend Sir, My Lords, and Gentlemen,
It now becomes my duty, for the seventeenth
time, to lay before you the number and causes of
the deaths in the Parish in the year 1872, and to
present you with a summary of the work under my
direction; to which I beg to add a few observations
of my own. I am happy to feel that my remarks
will be shorter than usual, as the past year has
witnessed the termination of one of the largest and
fiercest epidemics known to London during the
century, and, at the same time, a remarkable diminution
in the existence and fatality of other epidemic
diseases.
