coffee, tea, pickles, condiments, and other things,
and I believe that much good has been done by the
knowledge of the fact that I was ready to undertake
the analysis of any article of food that was found to
be unfit for eating, or improperly adulterated.
In 1861 the most especial business of the year
was the Inspection of the Bakehouses of the Parish.
Whilst several were found to have special defects,
which were speedily corrected by the proprietors,
the great majority of the bakehouses were found to
be well-ventilated, clean, and free from objections
on the score of the health of the persons employed.
In 1862 there were evident indications of the
appearance of an epidemic of Small Pox, and I was
most anxious to secure a complete vaccination of the
whole Parish, and the matter having been considered
by your Sanitary Committee, the Sanitary Inspector
was appointed to make a house to house visitation.
His services were continued till 1865, when other
arrangements were made for attaining this object.
During his period of service, several thousand
persons were examined from house to house, and I
personally examined several hundreds of children in
the parish schools.
In 1863 the Small Pox appeared amongst us.
Twenty-one persons died of the disease. The epidemic
was not so severe as the one of 1871, and
there were always fewer cases prevailing at a given
