each person residing in its small houses would be to
eject 3,000 or 4,000 persons from their present

Excess of Births over Deaths.
The "Preliminary Report" gives the excess of
births over deaths during the ten years, from 1861
to 187]. They are as follows:—
St. James's Square Division 340
Golden Square Division 146
Berwick Street Division 1,048
1,534
Thus whilst the population has been diminished
1,737 persons, the births have exceeded the deaths
by 1,534, so that 3,270 persons must have permanently
left the Parish during the ten years ending
1871.
General Mortality in 1871.
By reference to the first series of tables in the
Appendix, which record the nature of the diseases
and the number of persons who have died in the
year, it will be found that the whole number is 854.
This, however, includes the death of 177 persons
who have died in the Workhouse in Poland Street.
Of the deaths in the Workhouse 38 persons have
been brought from the Parish of Saint Anne s, Soho,
thus reducing the whole deaths of the Parish of
Saint James, Westminster, to 824.
