I attended an inquest on July 10th, on the body
of a child who died after vaccination. It appeared
that the child had been vaccinated by Dr. Allen,
of Soho Square. It was taken by the mother to
Dr. Allen's surgery, and then vaccinated from
another child. The next day a swelling came on
in the arm in the places which had been punctured,
but there was no evidence that the Cow Pox had
been communicated to the child. The surgeon,
Mr. J. F. Clark, who attended the deceased at its
death, gave it as his opinion that the child had died
of Erysipelas, not from the introduction of vaccine
matter into the arm, but from the punctures produced
by the lancet. The jury returned a verdict
of "Death from Natural Causes."
At the inquest there was present the father of a
child who had been also vaccinated by Dr. Allen,
and who had died after the operation. As this
child had died in my Coroner's district I have since
held an inquest on the body. This child was also
vaccinated from another child in Dr. Allen's
surgery. In this case the arm went through all
stages of the Cow Pox disease successfully, but on
the ninth day after vaccination Erysipelas came on,
and he died under Dr. Allen's care five weeks after
he was vaccinated. A post mortem examination was
made by Mr. Harding, who gave his opinion at the
inquest that the child had died of Erysipelas brought
