MORTALITY AND DISEASE OF THE
YEAR 1863.
Having dwelt so largely upon the general character
of our population in the preceding part of
this Report, I only propose to make a few remarks
on the tables of mortality which are appended.
From these tables you will see that the deaths of
the past year are 757. This number is slightly
above the average of the last seven years, and is
above the mortality of 1862, and is nearly the same
as that of 1861. On looking over the tables for the
purpose of ascertaining whether any particular form
of disease has been more than usually destructive
of life, we find no evidence that any of the more
controllable forms of disease have been more than
usually active. Consumption of all the definite
forms of disease takes the lead, and gives us 107
deaths. This however is not so large a number as
died in 1862 of this disease. Turning to the group
of Zymotic diseases they do not appear, with the
exception of small-pox, to have been unusually fatal.
