This table has considerable interest. In the
first place it shews that not half the inhabitants of
St. James's Westminster, were born in London at
all, and probably only a small proportion of them
were born in St. James's. This does not arise
from increase of population, as St. James's in this
respect has rather decreased than increased within
the last thirty years. The number of persons under
twenty who have been born in London is much
greater than those over twenty, shewing the tendency
to removal after that age. In the same way it will
be seen that the number of persons who come into
the Parish to live is much greater after twenty than
before twenty years of age. Another curious fact
presented by this table is the much larger number
of women than of men who have been imported
into the Parish. This probably arises from the large
demand for domestics, of whom there are 3000.
The large number of 1584 persons are found in
the Parish, who are foreigners, and not British
subjects. Of these 1066 are males, and 518 are
females. The following table shews in what part
of the world these persons were born.
