consumers, is oncouragod. rTlio improvement of
the dwellings of the poor in this parish would bo
attended with immense economy, and the real way
to savo the rates in this instance, as in so many
others, is to spend them in the removal of the causes
of pauperism, disease, and death.
VENTILATION OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
During the year I have visited most of the places
of public resort for the purpose of ascertaining tlio
condition of their ventilation. The dancing rooms
in Groat Windmill Street, the Pavilion in Tichborno
Street, and othor places of public resort of that
kind are on the whole well-ventilated, and I found
the proprietors ready to adopt any suggestion that
could bo made for increasing the comfort and
liealthfulness of these rooms. In most of them
provision is made for gotting rid of the products of
tlio combustion of the gas employed, and arrangements
made for the admission of fresh air below.
Many of the cliapels, churches, and school-rooms
are deficient in the means of ventilation, and are
constructed in such a way as to prevent an efficient
discharge of bad air, and a full supply of fresh air.
At tho same timo it is evident that as a conviction
of the importance of this subject gains ground with
those most interested in tho conduct of these places
great improvements aro continually being made.
