In examining these Tables you will see that sometimes
one of these diseases, and sometimes another
that gains the ascendancy. Whilst in 1861 hooping
cough claimed the greatest number of victims, in
1862 scarlatina carried off the largest number. In
no one year has any of these forms of contagious
diseases been fatal to so many as scarlet fever was
last year. Of the 66 cases, 29 occurred in the
Berwick Street division, thus clearly pointing to the
fact that where the population is thickest there this
disease is most deadly in its effects. I pointed out
