brickwork round the mouths of the old drains ; and
this class of work generally, from the confined and
cramped position in which men are obliged to work,
is necessarily tedious and expensive. On the whole,
the Vestry have cause to congratulate themselves
that, with the exception of positions that cannot be
improved without great and almost needless
expense, the whole of the Parish is satisfactorily
drained, and perhaps in as good working order, if
not better, than any corresponding district.
A great number of gullies have been cleansed, not
only by the Contractor, but the flushers employed
by the "Vestry, who have also relieved a great many
impeded drains, where they could be reached from
the sewer, and generally rendered every assistance
to the inhabitants, who have had the misfortune
from stoppages in their drains.
Referring to the subject of urinals, it will be seen
that the Works Committee have not been idle ; the
few that there are in the Parish have been always
carefully attended to, and nothing left undone that,
in their opinion, ought to be fairly done, to render
these necessary evils as little objectionable as
possible. It must be borne in mind that these
alterations, slight as the space they occupy in
writing, have all been the subject of much deliberation,
as is also the case with the various other
items mentioned, and which the records of the
proceedings of the Works Committee will shew.
