bud health. The Law regards them as "Nuisances
"injurious to Health," and their immediate abolition is
imperative on the Owner of the premises on which they are
situated.
Water.—Cisterns and Water-Butts should be cleaned
out once a month. They should on no account be left
uncovered. In the summer, it is a safe plan to boil or
filter all water used for drinking. Water from Pumps with
surface Wells is liable to contamination, and should be
avoided for drinking purposes, especially in hot weather.
Fresh Air.—When Fires are not in use, sitting-rooms,
bed-rooms, and shops, should be ventilated, by letting down
the top sash of the Window, by ventilating panes in the
upper part of the Window, or by valves in the Chimnies.
The majority of Windows do not open as they ought by
sashes from the top, and a large number where top sashes
do exist are not used, by which the proper ventilation of
rooms is prevented, and a large amount of disease
engendered.
Persons having Complaints to make of Nuisances injurious
to Health, should apply at the Vestry Offices,
14, Marshall Street, between the hours of 9 and 4 o'Clock,
where a Book is kept for the Registry of Complaints, which
will be attended to by the Medical Officer of Health, and
Sanitary Inspector.
(Signed) EDWIN LANKESTER, M.D.
Medical Officer of Health.
