The mortality amongst children was reduced in
1858, as shewn in the following Table:—

These tables are interesting, as shewing that a
large proportion of the life saved during the past
year was infant life. They shew that 57 less
children died in 1858 than in 1857; and moreover,
that of these, 46 were above one year old. They
also shew, in comparison with the whole mortality
of the parish, that the relative mortality of child
death to that of adult death was less in 1858 than
in 1857; for in 1857, 376 persons died above
5 years of age, and in 1858, 384 died above that
age.

of children in London, and the death of children in
the country, 1 have made inquiries with regard to
