Under these circumstances, I think it my duty
to urge upon all those who employ young persons in
shops, work rooms, or factories, the necessity of
ventilating properly such rooms, and diminishing
as far as possible the number of hours in which
young persons are employed, exposed to the contaminating
influence of gas light. For this reason,
I cordially concur in those public movements which
have for their object the diminution of the hours in
which young people are confined in shops, and the
reduction of the hours of labour to which young
females are exposed in dress making and millinery
establishments.
The next class of diseases to which I would call
attention, and which are closely connected with the
last, are diseases of the lungs, more especially the
group comprehended under bronchitis, pleurisv, and pneumonia.
The following Table shews the death
from these diseases in 1858, in each quarter in
each division of the parish, and the age of those
attacked:—
