regarded the causes of so vast an amount ot
misery, poverty, and death, and wonder that so
little was done for their removal.
I now present you with a table which will
shew the districts in which the death in 1858
has occurred, as well as the number of deaths,
and affords a comparison between the deaths of
1856, '57, and '58.

From this Table it will be seen that the death in
1858 was less by 16 than in 1856, and by 49 than
1857. It will also be seen that the death in 1858
has been precisely the same in the Berwick Street
division as in 1857, greater in the Workhouse,
9 less in the St. James's Square division, and 50 less
in the Golden Square division than in that year.
The greatest improvement took place in the third

usual on account of the alterations going on in the building. I have ascertained
from the Master of the Workhouse that 170 persons have thus been
temporarily removed, and that amongst them four deaths have occurred.
