harmony with the Library; this has been the chief cause of delay,
but it is now expected that the work will be completed early in June.
The provisions are three w.c's and two washhand basins. The contract
amount of this work is £363.
GENERAL.
The work of laying out the Paragon and Portland Place is well
in hand, and it is expected they will be ready for opening early in
June. The work here has been carried out jointly by the Vestry and
the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, the Vestry providing
and fixing the railings, gates, hydrants, paving the footpaths, &c., and
the Metropolitan Gardens Association laying out the grounds,
providing the trees, and planting.
We have now planted in the parish 421 trees—during the year,
37 trees either died or were knocked down, these were replaced, and
are, generally, going on satisfactorily.
The church-clock, up to the present, has been lighted by gas,
and has not been giving satisfaction—it was therefore decided, after
receiving estimates from the Surveyor, as to the cost of wiring and
lighting, to have it lighted by electricity. This was turned on for
the first time on the 2nd of March, with satisfactory results, and it
is anticipated that the cost of electricity will not exceed that previously
paid for gas.
A refuge has been fixed in the centre of the Borough High
Street, near Marshalsea Road, and it has been greatly appreciated by
those crossing this busy thoroughfare, and it has also been of great
assistance in regulating the traffic.
At the request of the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association,
the cleansing of the horse-troughs erected in this parish by the
Association has been taken over, and is now carried out by your staff.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
ARTHUR HARRISON,
A. M. Inst. C.E.,
Surveyor to the Vestry.
